This is project aims to improve the quality of care and close the gaps in the patient experience of lung cancer care in Kenya. The project is a two-year project to run from October 1 2020 to September 30, 2022, and is being implemented together with Kenya Hospice and Palliative Care Association (KeHPCA) and International Cancer Institute (ICI) with support from Charities Aid Foundation (CAF).
The project aims at improving the quality of lives for lung cancer patients (and families) from communities to health facilities where they receive treatment including palliative and supportive care through strengthening referral systems. It will establish and build the capacity of patients through support groups and create awareness of the communities on care, psycho-social support and benefits of early detection. As a pilot, the project will collect data on the prevalence of Lung Cancer for effective advocacy. At the health facility, the project will seek to work with trained health care workers to provide care and treatment to patients and carers.
The project focuses on the following objectives:
Improved quality of life for patients and their families.
Patients and communities empowered with knowledge about lung cancer and where to go for care; reduced stigma and discrimination.
Health Care Professional has better knowledge and skills on lung cancer diagnosis, treatment including supportive and palliative care and referral systems.
Lung Cancer Management included in county/national guidelines in the 2020 Non-Communicable Disease Strategy
The “Blueprint for Innovative Access”, is a concept that aims to identify and co-create a sustainable “Blueprint”, leveraging the unique strengths of partners, including healthcare, pharmaceutical and other non-traditional industries, governments, NGOs, healthcare professionals and the community, working in collaboration to improve access to optimal NCD control services. This ranges from health advocacy, prevention, screening, early detection, diagnostic services, quality treatment, palliative care, survivorship, and research to save lives in low (LICs) and low- and Middle-income countries (LMICs).
The project will build Meru County to become one of the NCDs Care Centre of Excellence (CoEs) and resulting in a ‘Blueprint’ to replicate across Kenya, and into other LIC and LMIC countries. With funding from Takeda through Amref Health Africa in Kenya, the project aims to achieve the following objectives between April 1 2020 – March 31, 2022.
Implementation of effective NCD prevention and control policies and WHO Best Buys with a multi-sectoral approach including increased county budgetary allocations.
Efficient health care system that provides optimal management of diabetes and hypertension.
