Give NCDs more attention Sept 15, 2020 by Charity Muturi
NCDs account for half of hospital admissions and deaths yet receive only three per cent of the health budget. The Ministry of Health and all health-related agencies should prioritise the management of NCDs through building a resilient supply chain of quality essential NCD medicines and continuous healthcare worker training on NCD-prioritised triaging. Patients living with NCDs have been put on the back burner as Covid-19 patients are prioritised. Yet every day we bury people who die to complications of cancer, diabetes, heart, kidney, sickle cell, stroke, mental health disorders and other NCDs. These deaths are due to disrupted access to healthcare, including higher susceptibility to and fear of Covid-19. Read Full article
Study on Harmful Use of Pesticide in Kenya
The Kenya Organic Agriculture Network (KOAN) launched a report on pesticide use in Kirinyaga and Muranga Counties petitioning the parliament to withdraw toxic pesticides due to their negative impacts on human health, environment, and toxicity to pollinators. KOAN in partnership with Route To Food Initiative (RTFI), Biodiversity Biosafety Association (BIBA), and Resource Oriented Development Initiative (RODI), undertook the pesticide survey in Muranga and Kirinyaga counties whether the identified pesticides are available and in use in the two Counties. The findings revealed a concerning use of pesticides, including the ones that have been withdrawn in Europe, and also high toxicity levels of pesticide residues in tomatoes and kale. Know It, FIGHT It.
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Breast cancer is on the rise in Kenya. Women are succumbing to it at a much younger age compared to much of the world. Speaking during the official launch of the National Breast Cancer Awareness Month (October 2020) at the Kenyatta National Hospital on October 13, Ministry of Health CAS Dr Rashid Aman expressed concern about early detection, awareness and screening services that have unfortunately remained low. 75% of women in Kenya have not performed a self-breast examination (SBE) and only 14% have had a clinical breast examination according to data released by the Ministry of Health. Despite breast cancer accounting for 12.5% of all cancers in the country and 20.9% of all cancers among women, most women are yet to do breast examinations posing a challenge to early detection. Early diagnosis is key to effective treatment and survival, and this is where you can make a difference. The screening will improve health and wellbeing.
