August is Psoriasis Awareness Month and is used as an opportunity to educate, and inform survivors, on a range of topics varying from treatment, causes, triggers and management of the inflammatory and often irritating disease.
Psoriasis is a painful, severe, chronic non-communicable disease (NCD) caused by a dysfunction of the immune system, that affects more than 125 million people around the world. In addition to suffering from the disease’s typical manifestations, people living with psoriasis have an increased risk of co-morbidities, like diabetes and cardiovascular disease. The impact on mental health can also be significant.
The cause of psoriasis is still unknown but specialists do know that it is largely affected by the immune system and genetics.
