Many countries in Africa are experiencing alarming increases in overweight and obesity. Obesity is a risk cause for NCDs. In Kenya, in a study done by the CDC in 2018, the prevalence of obesity at 60.3% among urban residents with a higher risk among women in the urban areas associated with increased consumption of high-calorie, and high-fat diets. The World Obesity Live webinar will provide an overview of obesity in several African countries and address how different perspectives on and drivers of obesity contribute to some of the challenges. July 27, 2021, Nairobi, Kenya The NCD Alliance Kenya is pleased to announce a new Board Chair and three new Board members. Dr. Zipporah Ali – Board Chairperson Dr. Ali brings a wealth of advocacy and palliative care experience spanning over 20 years as the founder and immediate former Executive Director of the Kenya Hospices and Palliative Care Association (KeHPCA), and extensive contacts with hospices and palliative care providers in Kenya and the African Region. She advocated for the full integration of palliative care into Kenya’s health care system. Dr. Ali sits on the National Cancer Control Program and the National Cancer Institute Kenya and provides direction on ensuring that palliative care is part of comprehensive cancer care in Kenya. Patrick Ngechu – Treasurer Patrick holds a Bachelor of Business Management degree (Finance & Banking) and Certificates in International Public Sector Accounting Standards and Certified Public Accountant Kenya and part III of Certified Investment Financial Analyst. He is the Chief Executive Officer of the Kenya Association for The Welfare of People with Epilepsy (KAWE). Patrick believes in finding new sources of income for NGOs through adaptation to supplement existing sustainable funding. Grace Ochodo – Board Member Grace is a career educationist and administrator with a proven track record in the administration function of corporate and NGO sectors. Grace is a stroke survivor and lives with diabetes. She is the chair of Stroke and Hypertension Association (SAHA) a patient-led organization. She strives to collaborate with like-minded stakeholders to undertake programs for the prevention and management of stroke. Eric Angula – Board Member Eric is a result-oriented person with over a decade of experience building strategic partnerships and building thriving businesses across Africa. He has experience developing successful market access initiatives by making gains in market shares, generating internal support, and building executive relationships for organizations. With key expertise in Strategic Partnerships, Global Health Innovation, Business Development, he provides impactful tools to support growth and for scale plans. He was part of a team that innovatively impacted diabetic and hypertensive patients and trained health workers, community health volunteers, and peer educators on the management of NCDs. As we welcome the new Chair and Members, we acknowledge the dedicated and selfless service of Dr. Eva Njenga (Chair) Dr. Mary Amunyunzu-Nyamongo (Secretary), Prof Gerald Yonga (past Chair and Member), and Thomas Lindi (Treasurer) as members of NCDAK’s inaugural Board who have retired. Continuing members of the Board are David Makumi (vice-Chair), Dr. Lilian Mbau (Secretary) Dr. Peter Mokaya (Member), and Beatrice Gachambi (Member).

Status of Tobacco Production & Trade In Kenya and Africa
Kenya has the highest recorded smoking prevalence in Sub-Saharan Africa, with East Africa accounting for 90.43% of tobacco growing in Africa. The Ministry of Health has been attempting to enact and implement legislation that decreases the prevalence of smoking. Cancers, mental sicknesses, diabetes, lung diseases, hypertension among others, are on the serious rise in tobacco use as a leading risk factor. With a growing young population becoming susceptible to tobacco use. “Tobacco Consumption and related products are being talked about more frequently today than ever as causes of ill-health, especially NCDs”. Consultancy – Civil Society Involvement Status Report
NCDAK seeks services of consultant/s to undertake a rapid review of the involvement of civil society and PLWNCDs in NCDs related decision-making processes in line with the 2018 Political Declaration on NCDs and the 2019 Political Declaration on UHC that recognize the role of civil society, PLWNCDs/communities in the NCDs and UHC response and develop a concise report with clear recommendations in form of a policy brief.
