Background
NCD Alliance Kenya, in partnership with the Ministry of Health and Isiolo County Department of Health, is implementing the PEN-Plus strategy through support from the NCDI Poverty Network. The project focuses on improving access to care for people living with severe non-communicable diseases (NCDs type 1 diabetes, sickle cell disease, rheumatic heart disease, congenital heart disease, severe asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
Purpose
To strengthen the delivery of pharmaceutical services, the Alliance seeks a qualified, licensed, and motivated Pharmaceutical Technologist to manage the safe, efficient, and ethical use of medicines, health products, and technologies within the Kinna PEN-Plus NCD Clinic pharmacy.
Job Summary
Under the mentorship of the County Pharmacist and the direct supervision of the Facility In-Charge and NCD Alliance Kenya Program Manager, the Pharmaceutical Technologist will ensure the safe, ethical, and efficient management and use of medicines, health products, and technologies within the PEN-Plus NCD clinic at Kinna Health Centre.
Key responsibilities:
- Manage medicine inventory: order, receive, verify, and document all incoming pharmaceutical supplies.
- Ensure appropriate storage: maintain optimal storage conditions including cold chain, monitor expiry dates, and take corrective action as needed.
- Dispense medications: review prescriptions, counsel patients, and dispense medication accurately.
- Monitor and record: maintain prescription registers and daily logs of fridge and room temperatures.
- Prevent stockouts and wastage: track usage trends, monitor slow-moving items, and alert relevant stakeholders.
- Ensure regulatory compliance: manage Dangerous Drugs Act (DDA) stock and registers.
- Collaborate with clinical teams: advise on pharmaceutical issues, recommend substitutions, and support rational medicine use.
- Maintain cleanliness and order: ensure pharmacy and store areas are clean, well-organized, and secure.
- Submit timely reports: prepare and submit monthly pharmaceutical consumption reports.
- Perform any other duties assigned by supervisors.
Deliverables:
- Accurate inventory and prescription documentation.
- Timely issuance and replenishment of supplies.
- Monthly consumption and temperature monitoring reports.
- Reports on expiry tracking and stock movement trends.
- Compliance with regulatory requirements for storage and dispensing.
Qualifications and Competencies
- Education: Diploma in Pharmacy or Pharmaceutical Technology from a recognised institution.
- Professional Registration: Valid practicing license from the Pharmacy and Poisons Board of Kenya.
- Experience: At least 1–2 years of relevant work experience, preferably in a public health or NCDs care setting.
- Skills:
- Knowledge of pharmaceutical regulations and inventory management.
- Proficiency in pharmaceutical documentation and reporting.
- Excellent communication and patient counselling skills.
- Ethical conduct, accuracy, and attention to detail.
Reporting and Supervision
The Pharmaceutical Technologist will report to the Kinna Health Centre Facility In-Charge and NCD Alliance Kenya Program Manager and will be under the technical mentorship of the Isiolo County Pharmacist or designate.
Duration and Terms
This position will be contracted under NCD Alliance Kenya policies and may be renewed based on performance and available funding.
