Status of Tobacco Production & Trade In Kenya and Africa

Kenya has the highest recorded smoking prevalence in Sub-Saharan Africa, with East Africa accounting for 90.43% of tobacco growing in Africa.

The Ministry of Health has been attempting to enact and implement legislation that decreases the prevalence of smoking.

Cancers, mental sicknesses, diabetes, lung diseases, hypertension among others, are on the serious rise in tobacco use as a leading risk factor. With a growing young population becoming susceptible to tobacco use.

“Tobacco Consumption and related products are being talked about more frequently today than ever as causes of ill-health, especially NCDs”. Joel Gitali, Chair of Kenya Tobacco Control Alliance, said in a previous media briefing.
